Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (29/06/2025) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). The tepals containing the red fruits are the way to tell docks apart: here in Clustered Dock the tepals are elongated. Broad-Leaved instead has teethed tepals, Curled has tepals shield/heart-shaped, Wood's are a bit similar but have round fruits.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (10/07/2020) Field leading to Horton Wood, Small Dole. Henfield, W Sussex. Clustered because of the spacing betweem the whorls of fruits and oblong leaves which go nearly to the top of the plant.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (16/06/2021) From West Mill Lane along main Small Dole Road towards New Hall Lane, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex. Really pretty when they are in flower, but easily overlooked and you don't find the flowers in books. The yellow dangly things are the anthers so these are the male parts of the plant.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). A better picture - reverse of male flower bottom left, and you can just see the stigma with its frilly white appendages protruding from the female flower at the top.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). These are what the unopened buds look like. The yellow bits will be the anthers.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Buds, some just opening, others whereby the anthers have dropped off (the yellow bits on the ground).
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Look how tiny the female flowers are - the furry things are stigmas. The "bulkier" objects containing yellow things (developing anthers) are male flowers. So lucky to get these as my books don't have photos of Dock flowers.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Fully in flower. I haven't found any pics of flowers in books, so rather chuffed with this. Can't really see them as they droop downwards so much and the actual flowers are very small.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Clustered as leaves nearly all the way to the top unlike the other docks. Not spaced out whorls of flowers yet as this is a young specimen still in bud.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Clustered Docks have zig-zag stems and you can see that clearly here.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). A bottom leaf, similar to Broad-Leaved but not, because the sequence of images this came from show Clustered Dock-style tepals, not Broad-Leaved toothed tepals.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). A leaf further up the stem. The have pretty long stalks.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (29/06/2025) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Young fruits are pale and turn red as they ripen.
Clustered Dock (Rumex conglomeratus) (29/06/2025) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank adjacent to field). Fully ripe fruits now all red.
